VMware Host Hardware Status (SOAP) sensor - Error 1 element returns an error state: Memory

Votes:

Hi Paessler,

We have received the annoying PRTG alerts from a couple of VMware ESXi host for Hardware Status - VMware Host Hardware Status (SOAP) sensor type on our PRTG monitoring system. The error message says "Error. 1 element returns an error state: Memory" on PRTG. When we checked on the ESXi host and iLO for Memory error, we couldn't pinpoint any issue with Memory alerts or such kind of things on log.

We have already tried to clear iLO log and VMware hardware ipmi sel to hope it clears the alerts from PRTG. But it didn't fix the problem.

It has been so frustrating to check all over iLO logs and VMware logs, and can't find any log on memory error but PRTG monitoring keeps resisting to alert on memory error on VMware Hardware Status sensor. Now I am seeking a solution to clear the annoying alerts so any suggestion and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

Hello,

Thank you for your KB-post.

It may be that the ESX host reports a wrong status in its SOAP-API (but does show the correct status directly in the interface). We see this every now and then sadly.

Please connect directly to the problematic ESX host with the VSphere Client and restart the 'vxpa' service.

You can also try to restart the CIM service on the ESX as well.

Does that help?

Hi Isidora,

Spot on. The solution you provided works for me. Thank you so much.

At first attempt I restarted the services from vCenter for the host and got error and didn't work but as you said I directly connect to the affected host and restarted the services, vpxa and CIM server it cleared the alert from PRTG. Much appreciated for your help.

Hi,

I tested the restart of both services but I always have the same error ...

Would you have an idea?

Hello,

Thank you for using our PRTG Network Monitor and contacting Paessler TechSupport.

To debug this, we would like to look into the sensor debug log for the datastore sensor. To activate this debug log, please enable the "Write Result to Disk" Option in the settings of the sensor. And then forward us the logfile. You will find it in the "Logs (Sensors)"-Subfolder of the data directory of the according PRTG Probe running this sensor (https://kb.paessler.com/en/topic/463-how-and-where-does-prtg-store-its-data).

PRTG dashboard :

Requires .NET 4.5 or later to be installed on the probe system.

For this sensor type you must define credentials for VMware servers on the device you want to use the sensor on. Ensure you enter a user with sufficient access rights to obtain statistics (read-only usually works).

This sensor only shows items that report an actual status, so you might see more "sensors" in your vSphere client than the number of states available in the channels of this PRTG sensor.

The parent device must be a VMware ESXi server version 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, 6.0, or 6.5. We recommend that you do not use this sensor type on your vCenter. Reliable hardware information can only be provided when this sensor is created on your physical host server as parent device.

We recommend Windows 2012 R2 on the probe system for best performance of this sensor.

Knowledge Base: I cannot add VMware sensors because of "wrong" password although it is correct. What can I do?

This sensor type can have a high impact on the performance of your monitoring system. Please use it with care! We recommend that you use no more than 50 sensors of this sensor type on each probe.

Quentin, I did delete the sensor log here in the KB, as it may contain data, that you don't want the whole world to see. And it also was cut off, and not complete. Please send it via email with a response to the email-notification on this KB thread here.

Hello, I am having the same issue: "Error. 1 element returns an error state: Memory" I checked the debug log at C:\ProgramData\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor\Logs (Sensors)\Result of Sensor 10468.txt

There is a line that goes "</systemHealthInfo><hardwareStatusInfo><memoryStatusInfo><name>Memory</name><status><label>Red</label><summary>The physical element is failing</summary><key>Red</key>"

I already restarted management agents on the esx host. No luck so far with this memory check within the hardware soap sensor. When accessing the esx with Vsphere web client there is no error at all on the hardware sensors. Are there other troubleshooting steps I could follow? Thanks in advance.

If you've already tried restarting cim & vxpa-service I can only recommend to contact VMWare here directly. The server is definitely reporting a memory issue here via the SOAP API, and at the moment, you don't know which is right. The API or the VSphere Client.

Restarting CIM & VXPA Service should not restart the VMs actually.

Diego, exactly! To activate this debug log, please enable the "Write Result to Disk" Option in the settings of the sensor. And then forward us the logfile(s), it may be up to three. You can identify them by the sensor ID and will find it in the "Logs (Sensors)"-Subfolder of the data directory of the according PRTG Probe running this sensor (https://kb.paessler.com/en/topic/463-how-and-where-does-prtg-store-its-data).

Greetings, I am having similiar problems with an HP esx host. Vcenter shows the host has no issues, ilom also shows everything is okay. However the hardware status SOAP sensor shows this warning state:

  • servername* - [Hardware Status]

Warning. 12 elements return a warning state: Other --- 0.7.1.135; Other --- 0.49.0.161; Other --- 0.3.0.176; Other --- 0.3.1.177; Other --- 0.3.1.178; Other --- 0.3.1.179; Other --- 0.3.1.180; Other --- 0.3.1.181; Other --- 0.3.1.182; Other --- 0.3.1.183; Other --- 0.35.0.211; Other --- 0.35.0.212

------------------ I have tried to re-add the hardware status sensor but it continues to have the same issue, please help!

Hi,

The error message "elements return a warning state" is quite common after an update of the ESX environment and most likely caused due to cached values in the VMWare HTTP API, that is been queried by PRTG and which returns those values. Have you already tried this:

My VMware host sensor can’t find data. What can I do?
Host IPMI system event log status" alarm in vCenter Server (1033725) (VMware KB)

Alternatively, you can also add the warnings to the Known Warnings list within the sensor's Settings tab.

Best,
Sebastian

Very nice, unfortunately that didn't fix the issue yet. The device still shows yellow/warning status, even with the known warnings filled out. I've tried various syntax forms with no luck. My original error is like this:

Unknown. 12 elements return a unknown state: Other --- 0.7.1.135; Other --- 0.49.0.161; Other --- 0.3.0.176; Other --- 0.3.1.177; Other --- 0.3.1.178; Other --- 0.3.1.179; Other --- 0.3.1.180; Other --- 0.3.1.181; Other --- 0.3.1.182; Other --- 0.3.1.183; Other --- 0.35.0.211; Other --- 0.35.0.212

So I tried known warnings filled out with each one of these, none of them worked though. The official manual note states: "Enter one or more warning messages that you want to ignore, separated by semicolons. With this option, you can filter out known warning messages that do not affect the functionality of the target device. Any whitespaces are ignored for comparison." Sounds great, I tried several variations with no luck, spaces and no spaces, only the numbers with semicolons:

0.7.1.135;0.49.0.161;0.3.0.176;0.3.1.177;0.3.1.178;0.3.1.179;0.3.1.180;0.3.1.181;0.3.1.182;0.3.1.183;0.35.0.211;0.35.0.212;

I see a new function has been added called "Ignore uknown status". I've tried turning that on it appears to work for the time being. I'll update if it starts doing it again, thanks!

Hey,

Glad to read that you've found a suitable way for you. To add another component for complexity, please note that PRTG version 20.1.57.1745 also updated the VMware Host Hardware Status (SOAP) sensors. They now categorize unknown states reported by the VMware host server as entity with its own sensor channel. Please note that an unknown state reported by VMware isn't a problem per se. It can mean that the VMware host is not able to provide information for a certain hardware states. For instance, a physically available memory slot which is currently unequipped would be reported as unknown state.

Now, the available sensor setting for Known Warnings is only purposed for actual warning states of the host server. Because of this, you encounter the sensors to show a new warning state after the PRTG update. In this case, please switch the Ignore Unknown States setting within the sensor's "Settings" tab from the default option to "Do not show unknown states".

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

Best,
Sebastian
