Hi, we have a running setup of Version 7.2.4 Server of PRTG. we want to migrate to Version 8, but we want to make sure we can roll back to Version 7 if we encounter problems. we have experienced this problems before on different subversions of version 7, that was causing problems, and we had to roll back.

Is there a way (other than taking snapshot/image/backup of the current setup), that a rollback can be done in such cases?

prtg-7 prtg-v8 rollback

Hello,

there is no "official" supported downgrade-option for 7->8. The only way is, as you presume correctly, create a backup of the PRTG datafolder prior the upgrade to PRTG 8. And then in case you experience problems restore the backup, by:

  • Un-installing PRTG 8 (best with removing all registry keys as well)
  • Installing PRTG 7 again
  • Stop PRTG core and probe services on the PC:
    • In the "PRTG Server Administrator" program choose the "Service Control" tab and click on "Stop"
    • In the "PRTG Probe Administrator" program choose the "Service Control" tab and click on "Stop"
  • Find the data folder:
    • In the "PRTG Server Administrator" program choose the "Core Server" tab and find the "Path for data files" setting
  • Open this folder in the Windows Explorer:
    • Please bear in mind that you might need to adjust the Windows Folder View Settings in order to see the, by default, hidden datafolder of PRTG
  • Copy all files to the data folders of the target system from the backup
    • Overwrite all files on the target system
    • Note: the following folders might not be necessary for the backup: "Configuration Auto-Backups", "Logs (System)", "Logs (Debug)", "Logs (Web Server)", "Report PDFs"
  • Restart the PRTG Services

Best Regards
