PRTG and large installations

PRTG has a powerful web interface that comprises a lot of scripting and many connections to the PRTG core server that are realized in the background to provide a better user experience.

However, for installations of several thousand sensors, especially for installations with over 4,000 sensors, we recommend that you choose the option to Limit features and delay display to retain fast response times within the PRTG web interface. This option is under Setup | System Administration | User Interface | Performance Handling. For large installations of over 8,000 sensors, we experienced that responses coming in were up to 50% faster.

What limiting features and delaying display does

The Limit features and delay display option changes the following settings:

  • Folds up all items in the device tree by default: All devices are collapsed in the normal tree view (no individual sensors are shown) unless you have opened them.
  • Hides all mini graphs on the Overview tab of devices and in the Sensors menu.
  • Does not show open ticket notifications and delays new log entry notifications next to the sensor status overview bar.
  • Monitoring data display may be delayed for up to one minute (in the PRTG web interface only). Usually, PRTG calculates in the background the display of sensor states every 5 seconds for every user. The delay helps reduce the load.
