What sounds can I play in case of an alarm (for example, if a sensor is in the Down or Warning status)?

How can I change the default sound that I hear in my browser when viewing the PRTG web interface or the PRTG app for desktop?

This article applies as of PRTG 23

Sound alerts in PRTG

There are several ways PRTG can notify you with a sound when something is going on in your network that needs your attention:

  • Sounds in the PRTG web interface
    • On dashboards or on all pages
    • When viewing Maps
  • Sounds in the PRTG app for desktop and PRTG MultiBoard
  • Sounds in the Enterprise Console (deprecated)

PRTG web interface

Sounds in the PRTG web interface are embedded via HTML 5 and supported by current browsers, like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

On dashboards/all pages

In the settings of a PRTG user account, you can specify Audible Alarms. You can set this to either play on dashboard pages only, or on all pages.

When logging in to the PRTG web interface with this user account, you will hear a default sound in your browser after each page refresh whenever there is at least one new sensor shown in your Alarms list.

When viewing maps

You can create sounds in maps for specific objects. While viewing a map, an alarm sound will be played in your browser if the specific object is in an alarm state.

In the Map Designer, in the Properties selection, open Status Icons and select Status and audible alert (if alarms > 0) from the list. Apply this object to an item on your map (drag and drop it on the item).

Change the sound

PRTG uses HTML 5 to embed the sound files beep.ogg and beep.mp3 from the \webroot\sounds subfolder of your PRTG program directory (in \website\sounds before PRTG version 13.2.3). You can replace these files with your own.

Note: If you use a cluster installation, replace the files on all cluster nodes.

PRTG app for desktop: tray icon

You can use sound notifications in the PRTG app for desktop if you want to be alerted when sensors change to the Down or Warning status, or when there are no more sensors that are in the Down or Warning status.

To use any alerting functionalities, you must first enable the PRTG app for desktop tray icon. If the tray icon is not visible, the PRTG app for desktop cannot alert you.

Set a notification sound in the Desktop Notification settings. You can choose from a set of sounds that come with the PRTG app for desktop or use your own sounds. See the PRTG MultiBoard & PRTG app for desktop manual for more information.

Note: The sound file is played only on the computer that runs the PRTG app for desktop.

Enterprise Console: tray icon

Important notice: The Enterprise Console (EC) is unsupported and deprecated as of PRTG 19.4.53. As of PRTG 19.4.54, the EC installer is removed from PRTG.

We strongly recommend that you switch to PRTG app for desktop.

For information on how to uninstall the EC, see How to uninstall the PRTG Enterprise Console from the PRTG Server.

The Enterprise Console can play sounds for new alarms, new log entries, and new ToDos. You can specify the behavior as well as your own sounds in the Enterprise Console Options.

It would be great to be able to use sounds from elsewhere on your mobile device in PRTG as the default tones are not aggressive enough to wake me

Is it possible in the enterprise console to set one sound for when a sensor is in error, and one for when it is back up? It is slightly annoying to hear a sound that you have set to alert you that something bad has happened every time you fix the problem and the device is working again.

Hi Vasiliy,

Do you refer to PRTG Desktop or the PRTG Enterprise Console?
What format do you use now and how long and what size does the new file have?

Best regards,
Sebastian

Hello Vasiliy,

You can replace the sound files under /webroot/sounds. When using a cluster installation, please replace the files on all cluster nodes.

A restart of the PRTG Core Server afterwards might help as well as clearing the browser cache.

Best regards,
Sebastian

Have a look here https://kb.paessler.com/en/topic/79674-can-we-have-the-ability-to-set-audio-notifications-when-sensors-go-down-up or here: https://www.it-admins.com/using-powershell-for-text-to-speech/ - it's pretty much the same content.

Eventually this talks about on how to engage the Text-To-Speech engine of Windows for notifications.

My experience with this - having a talking NOC TV in the IT rooms for quite a while now:

  • I am glad I came up with the idea and was able to implement it
  • I reduced the text to a bare minimum - like device, sensor and code-words like RIP or ARISE - what ever you like - just keep it short and make it easy to hear the difference if something is back or something is down
  • have the code-word pronounced first - then the device and sensor - important cause you won't spend much attention unless you know if it is down - then you go like - wait - what is down?
  • out e.g. SLACK notifications go out after two cycles - the TV talks instantly - this actually proofed to be helpful
  • if the TV talks in "many voices" "is haunted" simulates a "Babylon" (okay - that's a joke now - what I mean is - many texts are spoken simultaneously - the script in the links is configured to do simultaneously output) - you know something really got down.. cause you have multiple alerts ... this is when I really start looking at the PRTG website instantly...
    • having said this - of course I tend to have an ear open anyways and check what is going on
  • it sure helps and gives people this WOW moment when they are around - it's kind of geeky
  • I am glad I have a remote-control on my desk for the TV - actually all of us do - if there is a bigger situation / incident - you sure want to mute that TV
  • it proofed valuable several times having conversations or being busy with stuff and not paying attention to e.g. Slack notifications, a spoken notification is different then any text message ever will be
  • chose a voice that you all like - it can be funny to use a foreign language as well, as long you still understand 95% of what it tries to pronounce.. e.g. a british/irish or australian voice can be funny while living in the USA - of course vice versa as well..

Hope this helps :-) in the end all of this is just my personal experience... summarized it means:

  • text to speech can proof very helpful
  • keep the messages short
  • first pronounce the up or down keyword - then device/sensor
  • have a way to easily mute the speaking system (remote control / mute button)
  • if you hear multiple outputs simultaneously - you should right away check PRTG

Regards

Florian Rossmark

Hi there,

Usually this file won't be overwritten, but if updates affects those files, it may happen that they will get overwritten.

Kind regards,
