Introduction
As stated in our article about PRTG's data folders, PRTG V9 needs (by default) its datapath one level higher in the hierarchy than V8. In order to achieve this, PRTG's V9 installer tries to rename the old folder with PRTG's configuration and monitoring data.
There are, however, a few possibilities this could fail. The installer informs you about such a failure but we have tried to ensure a problem free and consistent continuance of your monitoring.
Reasons for failure
The most likely reason for a failure in renaming PRTG's data path is that one or more files in the folder and its sub-folders are locked by the OS, i.e.
- opened in a text editor or
- in use by a backup program
The messages and their meaning
Renaming of
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application data\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor\V8
to
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application data\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor.tmp
failed. Nothing was changed.
This is the most likely case. It simply means that your data is still in the V8 subfolder. The next time a PRTG V9 installer is run, it will retry to rename the data folder. Try to close all log files prior to the install process and try to execute it outside of the usual backup schedules.
Renaming standard directory to .old failed.
After renaming the V8 folder, the installer tries to rename the main folder %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application data\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor where the V8 folder was located. If this fails, the installer tries to execute a rollback for the renaming operations. If this fails as well (it should not! However, this could hint at some trouble in your file system) a message tells you where your data are now stored. PRTG should run without problems, but you should change your data path to a new path as soon as possible as described in this article.
Rename to new standard directory failed. Data are now in
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application data\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor.tmp
If the last step (renaming the temporary folder to the main folder) fails, (it should not! However, this could hint at some trouble in your file system) a message tells you where your data are now stored. PRTG should run without problems, but you should change your data path to a new path as soon as possible as described in this article.
Deleting old directory
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application data\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor.old-datetime
failed.
This means that some extra files were located in the Main folder. In order not to lose them the PRTG installer doesn't delete this old directory so you can check and move the left-over files (if necessary) and delete the folder manually.
Note:
This applies only to installations with default paths. If you specified your own data path for server or probe, this setting should be unaffected by the upgrade process.
