This article applies as of PRTG 22

Find and install the Modular Disk Storage Manager

For the Dell PowerVault MDi Logical Disk sensor or the Dell PowerVault MDi Physical Disk sensor to receive performance values from your device, install the Dell PowerVault Modular Disk Storage Manager software on the probe system (on every node if you are running a cluster).

You will find this software on the resource CD that came with your device. Dell also offers resource CDs for download.

Example for MD3000i

For example, for the PowerVault MD3000i, find the resource CD file at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/products?app=drivers.

On the CD that the ISO file contains, navigate to the WINDOWS\APP directory and execute the file SMIA-WS32-03.35.36.58.EXE.

Note: File names and/or paths might have changed since we wrote this article.

During the setup process,

  • select the option to install a Management Station and
  • set the recommended option called Automatically Start Monitor to automatically start the management software after a computer restart.

After the installation, you can create your Dell PowerVault MDi sensor in PRTG.

Other MDxxxxx devices

For other resource CDs, refer to https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us to download current software.

hallo,

This article applies to PRTG Network Monitor 12.3 or later (not available yet!)

The sensor is not yet included, but Daniel already wrote the KB article in advance to have it available once the sensor is included in the release.

In the canary build of PRTG it should be available sooner, but that build should only be used for testing purposes!

Hello Sascha,

What PRTG version is used? Which exact version of the MD Storage Manager are you currently running?

Hi Jochen, we use PRTG 16.2.34.3242 and MDSM 11.25.0G06.0014 We found that Dell switch from an .exe Version of the MDSM to a java version. Maybe this is the issue.

Hi Sascha,
please try to run the following command on the machine the parent probe of the sensor is running on:

"<path\to\smcli.exe>" <host> -c "<smcli command>" -quick -S -e

What results do you get?

I've installed Dell MDSM 11.25.0G06.0016 with PRTG 16.1.21.1924+ and this does not work for me either.

Please explain what the above smcli does and what goes in place of "<smcli command>" if you'd like me to try it.

I can say that running "smccli 10.50.0.20 -c "show storageArray profile;" provides the expected output.'

The array is an MD3220.

Thanks!

@ MarkWolfe: What version of the MDSM do you have installed? The 64 bit or the 32 bit version?
Best regards

64 bit.

@MarkWolfe: There is the issue then. In the PRTG Version you have installed the sensor only checks for the 32 bit version. So you either can update to the most recent version of PRTG, install the 32 bit version of MDM or you can create the following Key in your registry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\storage\SMclient\Path

and move over the contents of the according 64 bit path. Then the sensor should work as well.
