What's the way to report on enterprise application availability (uptime)?

We have several enterprise applications whose services and processes run on multiple servers. I'd like to be able to report on uptime of the applications to provide SLA type reports for senior managment. What's the best way to go about this kind of reporting?

Add the servers as devices then add WMI service and WMI process sensors to these devices.
