How Many WMI sensors are maximum on what system ?

Votes:

0

on PRTG7.3 it says that on a Server a max. limit of 120 WMI sensors should be used but at the same time a max. of 10,000 WMI sensors can be used on an XP machine.

Can someone please list the Windows Systems with the max. recommended amount of WMIs?

I an particularly interested in Server 2003, XP and Windows 7 (32 bit)

Thanks

Fraser Reid

As a rule of thumb, we can say that WMI sensors need up to 10 times more resources than SNMP sensors. This is because of the architecture of these technologies. This means that you should be careful when setting up many WMI sensors and you should prefer SNMP sensors when possible.

Please understand that we cannot provide you with fixed numbers, due to the individual behavior of WMI in different configurations. You can refer to the manual section Detailed System Requirements for guidelines.

Please note two other hints regarding OS and intervals below.

Operating System

Generally, the WMI performance depends on the operating systems used. From our experience, you should use the following systems (in order of performance):

  1. Windows Server 2003
  2. Windows Server 2008 R2
  3. Windows XP
  4. Windows 7

Please see also How can I speed up PRTG - especially for large installations?

Scanning Interval

The WMI performance also depends very much on the scanning interval you select—the bigger the interval, the more sensors you can set up. This is because WMI sensors can only overload a system when they're in action. So, if you experience your system being slow when adding many WMI sensors, try using larger intervals.

does anyone have any updates on this question. Is it still 10 time more the resources for WMI? We are planning to run on a Windows Server 2016 and 2019.

Hello Luis,

Regarding WMI, our recommendations also apply for the latest versions of Windows Server. You should keep their number as lower as possible and avoid using low scanning intervals to prevent performance issues.

If you have questions, do not hesitate.

Regards.
