Hardware-based Cisco switches
Hardware-based switches like the 4000/4500– and 6000/6500 series perform the processing of data packets inside their hardware application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). They can only export NetFlow if this feature is built into their hardware, which is only the case for top-notch supervisor cards, and may even require the additional NetFlow card.
Here are a few particular characteristics.
Catalyst 4k/4000
Model(s) | NetFlow support | IOS | NetFlow version(s) |
Supervisor I, II, II Plus, III | none | – | – |
Supervisor IV | optional, requires NetFlow Daughter Card | 12.1.(19)EW | V1, V5, V8 |
Supervisor V | optional, requires NetFlow Daughter Card | 12.2(25)SG | V1, V5, V8 |
Supervisor V-10GE | built-in | 12.2(25)EW | V5, V8 |
PRTG currently supports NetFlow v5, v9, and IPFIX.
Catalyst 6k/6000
The configuration can be quite complicated for these models, depending on the code that you are running on the Cat6k. Available options are CATOS, hybrid, and native mode, which have all different features and capabilities. There are also different versions of NetFlow export, if the export comes from the SP or from the RP (slow path/fast path).
Model 12000
Model | NetFlow support | IOS | NetFlow version(s) |
12000 | yes | 12.0(14)S | V5 |
12000 | yes | 12.0(6)S | V8 |
12000 | yes | 12.3(1), 12.0(24)S, 12.2(18)S, 12.3(2)T | V9 |
PRTG currently supports NetFlow v5, v9, and IPFIX.
Other Cisco devices and software-based routers
Basically, all software-based Cisco devices with Cisco IOS software (most smaller routers) may be able to support NetFlow export v5 with IOS version 11.1CA or later.
Note: Not everything that is configurable under the IOS is supported and tested by Cisco.
Device(s) | NetFlow support | IOS | NetFlow version(s) |
All software-based | likely | 11.1CA or later | V5 |
Cisco 800, 1700, 2600, 3600, 3700, 6400, 7200, 7300, 7500 | yes | 12.3(1), 12.0(24)S, 12.2(18)S, 12.3(2)T | V9 |
Have a close look at the release notes for details.
Also keep in mind that when the NetFlow export is processed by the software, you should expect some CPU load impact. Carefully watch the CPU load of your device.
