How do you set up a monitoring for a Synology NAS?

Votes:

0

I tried to use the new Synology NAS sensors with our Backup NAS. But the NAS can't be found and the sensors generate just SNMP errors. Do i have to set up something like the probes on the NAS? Or is there a special way to Monitor a Synology NAS?

The Manual was not much helpfull.

Hi,
do you have activated SNMP on your Synology NAS? If not, please do so and then download the SNMP Tester and scan the device for Uptime and Available Standard Interfaces. What are the results?

I always get error SNMP error # -2003. I will check the settings on the NAS again. SNMP is activated on the NAS.

When using the SNMP Tester, please perform a Walk over the OID 1.6.3.1. Please make sure you have downloaded the latest version of the SNMP Tester as the walk functionality is not available in old versions of the tester.

May you try adding a SNMP Uptime Sensor to the device? Does that work?
Also what DSM version do you have installed on the NAS?

It gives me the error # -2003. DSM Version is 4.0-2219. If this is a general SNMP error, I will look up our network in general first. Maybe its a firewall issue.

Ok I correctet the port settings and SNMP settings in PRTG and now the SNMP Uptime Sensor works. But the Synology sensors don't. The systemhealth sensor delivers the message" No such Name" but you can't even define a name in the settings. The Physical Disk Sensor just says no disks aviable in the sensor setup.

Please download our snmp tester v5 Beta 11, perform a SNMP walk on your system for the base oid 1.3.6.1.4.1.6574 and send the result to our support team for analysis. Please don't forget to mention a link to this article, so the support team knows, what they have to do with the data, they get.

Hello,

We seem to have the same problem.

Synology RS408RP DSM 4.0-2228

SNMPWalk on oid 1.3.6.1.4.1.6574 shows no results.

SNMP Uptime via snmptester 5.1 and via PRTG sensor work. SNMP Traffic via snmptester 5.1 and via PRTG sensor work.

(Another Synology works perfectly).

What could be wrong with this one ?

Hi,
what DSM version do you have installed on the Synology NAS? And which precise NAS do you have?

Hi,
can you try adding a Custom SNMP Sensor using this OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.10.1.5.1 which should give you the actual CPU load of the NAS. Does that work?

Hi,

Just tried the oid and it gives me values. no clue if this is the cpu as i don't have access to the synology (will check next week).

Seems the synology template is using a diffrent oid.

Hi,
please perform an SNMP walk over the OID 1.3.6.1 on the Synology NAS and post the output here. You might use the SNMP Tester to perform the walk.

Hi,

I've started the snmp walk only to find out it stops at :

19-9-2013 11:52:00 (331 ms) : 1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.10.1.5.3 = "0"
19-9-2013 11:52:00 (352 ms) : Error: -1001

This is everytime I do the walk, so there must be some timeout or fault in synology.

Just double checked and still no firmware update available.

Hi,
I'm afraid we are not able to reproduce this behaviour here. May I ask you to contact the Synology Support regarding the error. The error code itself indicates that the data type delivered back for this OID is unknown.
Best regards
