Why is there high ping latency in Hyper-V virtual machines?

I encounter uncommon slow ping times with Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines on Windows Server 2012. Why is there such unexpected high ping latency in my Hyper-V VMs? What can I do to get correct pings?

High Ping Latency in Hyper-V Virtual Machines

Unusual slow ping times in Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines on your Windows Server might be caused by a Time Stamp Counter (TSC) drift, a clock synchronization issue, in certain conditions.

In order to fix these lengthy ping times on your Windows Server running Hyper-V, please execute the following command on an elevated command line or PowerShell: bcdedit.exe /set USEPLATFORMCLOCK on
