This article applies as of PRTG 22
Common WMI problems and solutions
PRTG users often complain about problems and errors when monitoring their systems with the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) sensors of PRTG. However, if you encounter issues with WMI sensors, keep in mind that, in most cases, WMI errors are the result of an improper WMI configuration or WMI installation.
To get your WMI monitoring working (again), also in the case of single sensor errors, follow this guide.
1. Check the basics
Familiarize yourself with the WMI technology. In case of problems with WMI, we strongly recommend that you go through the following article and explicitly check that your configuration meets the basic requirements:
If your WMI sensors show WMI error PE263 after updating as of PRTG 17.1.28.1341, see this article:
2. Check the WMI connection
If your system meets the requirements as listed in the article above, and WMI monitoring still does not work, test the connectivity and availability of the corresponding WMI counters. Run our WMI Tester on the probe system with the malfunctioning WMI sensors:
- WMI Tester

3. Solutions to the most common WMI errors
If you cannot get a WMI connection with WMI Tester, check our list of the most common WMI errors and possible solutions, especially if you encounter errors in the 800xxxxx range:
4. The repair list
If you have tried all the approaches as outlined in the articles above and your WMI sensors still fail, see the following article that has many of the common repair procedures.
Important notice: The options in the following article are not trivial, so we strongly recommend that you try out the tips above first. |
