Does a failover node need to always be running?

Is it possible to set up a failover node that only runs on-demand? I would like to set up a failover node on an offsite VPS and reduce costs by only booting it if primary master installation goes down for whatever reason.

There will be some problems in your scenario. The data on the servers cant be synced, so it will be incomplete. If you start the failover node, you will have no data in graphs or tables. If you edit, delete or create new sensors during your failover isnt running, the changes wont apear on the failover, too.
