Any procedures during upgrade v14.2.9 to XL5 version ?

Hi ,

We just purchase PRTG XL5 unlimit version license and would like to upgrade the currently ver14.2.9 to XL5 . Is there any procedure need to check before we install the new PRTG software ? In the past experience , we just installed the new software and updated the license on the same server , is it correct for XL5 upgrade now ?

OS: Windows Server 2003 (5.2.2 Build 3790 Service Pack 2), 8 CPUs (8x x64 Model 26 Step 5) We have the configuration backup files for the currently PRTG monitor system .

Regards, Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Yes, that's correct, your license should now state XL5. However, consider upgrading to the latest PRTG version as well as a newer Windows Version, as 2003 is not supported anymore, neither by PRTG nor Microsoft.

Hi Support ,

Thanks for your prompt reply . I have downloaded the latest software (ver17.1.29.1531) with the certificate license . If we are still using Windows 2003R2 and directly install v17.1 on the currently v14.2 then update the license . Is it ok for v17.1 ?

If not , should we upgrade os to windows 2012 first ? And the procedures for install v17.1 ?

Sorry , we are using PRTG to monitor the currently network environment . To prevent any false alerts during the upgrade , we have to make sure any procedure first .

Regards, Ryan

If it works as of now, it's okay - but consider upgrading Windows in the not so distant future.
Best way to upgrade would be:

  1. Install a new server with Windows 2012R2
  2. Install PRTG on the new server
  3. Migrate configuration and database according to our Migration Guide
  4. Once everything is stable on the new server, decommision and deactivate the old server / PRTG.

Thank you .

By the way , we also set up PRTG netflow servers including 4 agents (devices) . May we know there is any specific way to upgrade to v17.1 ? Or just install the new software then update the license ?

You're probably talking about PRTG Remote Probes - they'll be updated to 17.1 automatically as the core server sends the update to all connected probes.

I am not sure it's Remote Probes issue or function issue . Here is the thing that we have four PRTG servers with only monitor function and the fifth PRTG servers enables netflow function (not monitor) . The 6th , 7th and 8th are all netflow enabled being the collector role then send the information to the 5th PRTG server to collect netflow info . Thus I think we have four PRTG monitor function servers and four PRTG netflow enabled servers . How should I upgrade the four PRTG servers whcih enabled netflow function ?

Hi Ryan,

Could you open up a support request with [email protected], referring to this ticket? Please also provide a screenshot of your PRTG webinterface (the device tree specifically) and Setup > PRTG Status.

Thanks!
