Automatic Group - Cisco-Hostname instead of IP-Address

Votes:

Hello

When I add devices in an automatic group using a template the device is added with the IP-Address as name.

I want to have similar behaviour like when I add a device manually - then (Cisco device) when i enter the IP and start the search with the group the name automatically is changed to e.g. C2960_HQ (the "hostname").

Is this possible?

Hello Thomas,

If you click on the group for which the auto-discovery is configured, ensure that the option
Name Resolution | Use DNS names (recommended) is marked.

PRTG will then perform a DNS Reverse Lookup for the IP address and change the name of the newly created devices accordingly. Is that what you're looking for?

Best regards, Felix

Hi Felix

Thanks for your answer. I already marked this option, but this isn't really a DNS entry - it is only the "hostname" of a Cisco device. And the strange think is when I manually enter one device with a name "Test" and IP 10.10.10.1 after a search with my template the name of the device will be changed to C2960_HW (Test). But und my DNS there isn't an entry for this IP.

That's interesting. Could you please provide us with the Auto Discovery debug log from Logs (System) in PRTGs data directory? Just send it to [email protected] while referring to this thread. Thanks!

Kind regards,
