I know it can be done with a WMI script but I'm not particularly fond of Windows and would rather just copy & paste if someone already has it running.

Even though I am not able to provide you with a direct answer you might want to check out the following information I found on debugging options for monitoring a DNS.

Monitoring DNS server performance
Maybe they are helpful for you.
