Hey Jonathan,

to get the DNS name, PRTG simply performs a reverse lookup via the nslookup command. There is no other "magic" behind.

For details, please check the Name Resolution section here.

Hi, Sven Roggenhofer.

Does PRTG only use DNS ?

I found that PRTG got the device names automatically even though I don't set an DNS Server in NIC IP settings.

Thanks & Regards.

Hey Jonathan,

basically PRTG asks Windows to resolve the name directly. Here a reverse-lookup and eventually also a NETBIOS name resolution takes place. This is then reported back to PRTG.
