Managing Systems with Dynamic IPs

Votes:

Good Afternoon -

I'm trying out PRTG on my home lab and have a quick question. I performed an initial scan, grouped systems, and entered custom credentials for each (not on domain.) Unfortunately, I've gotten many errors recently as some systems on my network are dynamically addressed and whenever one changes IPs, its prior record shows an error of offline / no ping.

What is the best way to configure PRTG for this scenario? Can a system be customized with things like credentials via it's MAC instead of its IP to perhaps prevent this as well as having to rescan and reconfigure each IP change?

Thank You

Hey bzowk,

thanks for your KB-posting.

If your IP addresses change dynamically, simply use DNS-names/FQDNs instead. Nevertheless, PRTG is not able to work with MAC addresses as indicator. Only IP addresses or DNS-names/FQDNs are possible.
