I want to use PRTG on a Windows Server Core installation, but the system requirements for PRTG state that “Windows Servers in Core mode or Minimal Server Interface are not officially supported”. Why does PRTG not officially support Windows Server Core installations?

This article applies as of PRTG 19

Reasons for not supporting Windows Server Core installations

The Server Core option as the minimal installation option for Windows Server does not contain all Windows features, for example, there is no graphical user interface. For more information, see the Microsoft article What is the Server Core installation option in Windows Server?

However, PRTG core server systems and remote probe systems rely on components of the underlying Windows operating systems. This includes, for example, network components and also certain functional libraries. When you use a Windows Server installation in Core mode, there is no guarantee that all necessary Windows components are available for PRTG to run smoothly. Additionally, the Server Core option configuration can change unexpectedly so that PRTG might not work anymore. This is not desirable for a stable monitoring solution and this is the reason why we do not officially support Windows Server Core installations.
