Use case: setting up home bandwidth monitoring?

Votes:

0

Hi, I am trying to determine how much bandwidth is being consumed by my family to determine whether or not I need a home network upgrade. I downloaded the trial of PRTG and let it auto discover my devices. My gateway device is an old edition EERO model, and I am fairly sure it cannot stand up to 6 zoom video calls at once. I looked for documentation and have spent a while poking around in the tool but I am not sure if I understand all of the terminology... long time IT person, very dated network knowledge.

Are there any good guides or how-to's available?

Thank you!

Wow, I have a lot to learn here. Thank you for the pointers, I was not even sure what questions to ask!

So to generalize here (and for the benefit of future forum visitors), the only thing I *must* do is add a packet sniffer sensor to my probe device (which in this case is the local probe/the machine I installed the application on) and have it capture all of the protocols.

If I want to have more meaningful analysis, I should make sure all of my devices are named instead of just IP addresses. It might also be useful to group the devices into those that use wired connections and those that are wireless only so I can make smarter decisions about utilization and whether I need to upgrade my wifi receivers or if I should prioritize running cabling throughout my house.

Thank you for making this application available! It's overkill for home use for sure- maybe a future "prosumer" product opportunity?
