I would like to receive a down message for the first sensor in a group that goes down and summarize the rest. But only within that group of devices, not for the entire tree. Is that at all possible?

Regarding your question, I'm afraid that it's not possible to do what you would like to achieve.
You can indeed create a notification template to send the first DOWN message and summarize the others, by using the method "Send first DOWN message ASAP, then summarize". However, the template can't be only assign to a group, it will be automatically inherited by each device as well as their sensors. Then, you will get one notification only for each device.
