what happens at the end of the Maintenance Days? Is it separate from the license?

The maintenance is indeed separated of the licence which is perpetual (excepted for Paessler PRTG Enterprise Monitor). Please have a look to our dedicated page here: https://www.paessler.com/maintenance.
