Event Log (Windows API) Sensor - System Error Code 5 "Access Denied"

Votes:

Good Morning everyone.

I've tried to add the sensor "Event Log (Windows API)" to a server, but unfortunately I've receive the error "System Error. Code: 5. Access is denied". I've read many KB, but I don't find the solution. The WMI Credentials are correct and for the others sensors, I don't have any problems.

Destination Server (that I want to monitor) is a Windows Server 2019.

Thx for any help and wish you a good day, greetings :)

Hello,

We have received many inquiries about exactly this error in the last few days. Our developers are currently analyzing this issue - but I'm afraid we might not be able to solve it from our side, as the problem is caused by Windows updates. It's also mentioned as "Known issues" here:

- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/june-8-2021-kb5003694-security-only-update-68434340-6259-4adb-899a-2c3e117f4501 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/june-8-2021-kb5003646-os-build-17763-1999-81e2ff5a-0769-4e56-8762-059dd6e0d6bb

The only known solution would be to make sure that both servers (PRTG Probe and also the monitored target device) have the latest Windows updates installed.

- So please double check that all updates are installed on both servers
- Alternatively, you could also try uninstalling the affected Windows updates again.
- Instead of the "Windows API" sensor, you could also try the WMI based alternative. The Windows updates should only affect the logging API, but not WMI.

Kind regards
