Hello Sanoj,

First of all, with the latest version, we just changed the updating process a bit if you update from an older version. Nevertheless you should be able to update to the latest version from your version with only one intermediate update.

Here are the steps to update PRTG:

  • First, I would recommend to backup your data. PRTG stores data in these three locations:
    • The PRTG program directory (core installation, custom sensors, custom lookups, etc.)
    • The PRTG data directory (monitoring configuration, monitoring data, logs, etc.)
    • The registry (license key, admin login, IP settings, etc.)
  • To get a complete and consistent backup of the databases (for example, log database, monitoring database, Toplist database, ticket database), open the PRTG Administration Tool and stop the PRTG core server while running the actual backup process.
  • Next you can safely proceed to update the installation.
    • Start the PRTG core service.
    • Now we can navigate in the web interface to Setup > Auto Update > Status and click the Check For Latest Update and Download button.
    • Once the update is downloaded, click the Install Update [version number] button.
    • You will be asked to provide your license and information to continue.
  • Now your PRTG installation should update to the intermediate version. Now you need to repeat the updating steps to get to the latest version. Afterwards PRTG should run with the latest version.

We have more detailed information on performing PRTG updates here: Auto-Update - PRTG Manual (paessler.com)

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Thanks for the procedures.

We have 3 remote probes connected to the core server. What changes need to do on those probe servers?

Can you suggest?

Hey Sanoj,

Glad you found the steps helpful. Thankfully, with remote probes, you don't really need to do much of anything. Remote probes will download and install the updated version as soon as they reconnect to the updated core server automatically. As soon as the update is downloaded, the remote probe will disconnect, perform the update, and reconnect to the core server.

This information can be found in more detail in the PRTG manual here: Remote Probes and Multiple Probes - PRTG Manual (paessler.com)

Hope this helps.
