Automate sensor start/pause

Votes:

Hello,

Is there a way to automate starting or pausing sensors? We have a set of test VMs that is only occasionally used, so the default state of these VMs are off. We monitor these servers with PRTG and when we no longer need the VM, we shut down the servers and pause the sensors.

Problem is sometimes people forget starting the sensors when the VM is turned on and ending up having issues thats could have been prevented by having the PRTG sensor on (ex. full disk).

Any recommendation how to approach this use case?

Hello,

Unfortunately, we did not have a native function for this. However, you can try to set up each device as dependent on its Ping sensor, that way only the Ping sensor would go into a downstate and the other sensors would be paused.

Setup of dependency

1. In the PRTG web interface, open the settings of the Ping sensor on the device that represents VM.
2. In the Schedules, Dependencies, and Maintenance Window section, select Master sensor for parent and save your changes.

The Ping sensor is now the master dependency object for this device. This means that when the Ping sensor is in a Down status (meaning that the device is no longer reachable), the device that represents VM and all its sensors will be paused by dependency.
