What is an example of a custom sensor created in PRTG 7 that would not work in the newest version?

I've seen that most sensors should work, but before upgrading I'd like to get an idea of what kind of sensors may not carry over after the upgrade. In addition, would creating a VM with a clean install and importing the PRTG 7 database be a viable test option? Thank you for your responses.

Some of the sensors at http://code.google.com/p/prtg7addons/ do not work any more (there is a new website for v8 sensors here: http://code.google.com/p/prtg-addons/). Additionally, the return values of EXE sensors are handled more restrictively now, according to the specification that was already valid for PRTG 7.

If you use many custom sensors, testing your current configuration before migrating your productive server to PRTG 8 is a good idea. You would go through the following steps:

  1. Make a copy of your PRTG 7 installation to a test system using the instructions in this article: How can I move my PRTG installation to another computer?
Note: If you do not have a PRTG 7 setup file any more, please contact our support team.
  2. On the test system, install PRTG 8. Your configuration will be kept. For detailed information, please see: How can I upgrade from previous PRTG versions to PRTG V8?
  3. Once you've verified that all sensors work properly, upgrade your productive system to v8.

Two particular sensors that will not work after the upgrade are CheckPRTGVersion and SensorCount. But as Daniel already mentioned, the V8 versions can be downloaded from the new website. The Wike at http://code.google.com/p/prtg-addons/wiki/PTF_Custom_Sensors provides an overview of all downloadable sensors.

If you are using custom notifiers like the TrayNotifier or the Gadgets, you must also upgrade them. The new notifiers can be found at http://code.google.com/p/prtg-addons/wiki/PTF_Tools_VersionHistory
