How to setup interactive maps?

Does PRTG Support interactive maps, that would include a drill down feature into a 'sub' map? I am looking for a way for our on call support staff to be able to see our network and drill down into problem areas, instead of having one large network map with all of our devices on it. Thanks for the help.

In the Map Editor, you can insert a Custom HTML Element object and define Html Before and HTML After. In these fields, you could insert HTML with links to different maps.

The "before" field allows to add HTML code that will show up above the object in case, the "after" field allows to add HTML code that will show up below the object in case.

For example, if you wanted to add a link to our website (www.paessler.com) above the object and a link to Google below the object, you would need to enter the following in the object's before and after settings:

Before: <a href="https://www.paessler.com">Paessler</a>

After: <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a>

This will add a link to our web page at the top of the object showing the text "Paessler" and link to Google on at the bottom of the object showing the text "Google".

If you want to add a link to a different map, you would need to use the URL as provided under the "Get HTML" option of the map editor. A sample would look like this:

<a href="http://YOUR_PRTG_SERVER_IP/mapshow.htm?id=6531">YOUR_TEXT</a>

Please take a look at the other Knowledge Base entries regarding maps: Search for "map"

I apologize but I have never messed with HTML 'programming' or scripting so I was looking for an example of how something like that is done.

I searched through the knowledge base and came up with 6 map questions but from what I could understand none of them covered how to use the before and after html or to use it to link to another map that is created in the map editor and stored on the PRTG server.

Once again I apologize for being a noob but I just started at this company and was given this project this week. Thanks again for the help.

This technique does work, however there's one thing inadequate about it. When your browser takes you 'down' into the map that you've created a link to, the page displayed is missing the all of the prtg menu bar and controls. How come? Is there any way to preserve them? Thanks!

John, which version of PRTG are you using? Have you tried the "Map Rotation" if that may already directly solve your request (seeing as this question here and it's solution are already 2 years old)?

Hi Torsten! :)

I have just examined 'Map Rotation'. I like it very well! :) BUT, it provides something different than what my group is looking for. We want to be able to create maps that a first-level call center person can drill down into to find and understand the topology of the source of a sensor with a raised alarm.

Are the maps in prtg in general an area of the product that significant enhancements are planned for? I have already found a few other things which would really make them suitable for our needs.

1. Complete drill down capability. So, that means the prtg menu would remain in place when clicking into an embedded link on an initial map page.

2. Being able to configure parent objects to show a visual alert when a sensor some number of child layers below raised an alarm, so that someone looking at the top level map would know to drill down into it to see more tail about the alarming sensor.

3. Much more control over the appearance of map objects. The size of objects, and the fixed placement of their name and other pieces of information, quickly gets in the way when I am trying to create a map of our campus that is overlayed onto a line drawing, background image of the buildings on our campus. I need to be able to make the object's text information very small and control it's placement carefully, otherwise the map becomes unreadable.

4. Make it possible to select a default object icon to be used when building a map and dragging objects and sensors onto it. So far I have only been able to see that I can change the icons for an object after I've placed it on the map. Every object I place in the map initially uses an icon of a desktop computer system.

I will probably find more features to request as I work with the system some more. I do think the product looks really excellent as far as what it already does and includes. I really like it a lot from that perspective, so far. So thank you to you and your colleagues for that already :)

I've also just been finding that when using Map Rotation, I am able to select the refresh interval, but instead of the map rotating to the next map at the interval I choose, the map currently being shown just begins to be refreshed at the selected interval, and the rotation stops happening. Is that correct behavior?

Another item with building maps, in terms of working with objects, is being able to still see a name displayed on that at all, when you resize them to their smallest. Trying to put a lot of objects onto the page and then arrenge them when they're sized to fit is difficult because no name is displayed at all on the objects when they are smaller than a certain size.

Also, the ability to make the background of objects and their text labels transparent would be very helpful. Being able to set the color of the objects and their text labels is yet another thing. That all would allow objects to be designed so that the background image behind them could still be helpful to understanding what the map is trying to show.

I found more. When looking through the groups of icons that can be chosen to assign to map objects, it looks like some of the categories have more icons in them available than can fit in the list without scrolling further down to see the rest of them. However, I am not getting any scroll bar that allows me to scroll down and reach them?

Being able to sort lists of objects by name or ip address would help a lot too.

Another much desired feature would be to make the ip addresses of device objects much easier to find, at all.

More feature controls needed:

For device names, instead of only two choices - (ip address, or <DNS, WMI, SNMP System>), greater control is needed. What if I want to control what name is used, very specifically? For example, I do not want to have the names be set to ip addresses, because with almost 400 devices, I would have no way of really knowing which one was which, unless I could remember what all 400 ip addresses were for. However, what if the system SNMP name of each device isn't acceptable either? For example, all my Cisco routers and switches append their domain onto their system name. I do not want all the devices in PRTG to have a fully qualified domain name. That string is just too long for the limited amount of space there is when trying to put these objects into maps. I have a local hosts file on the PRTG server where I put the names for all the devices that I wanted them to have. I can see that PRTG found those as well, and includes them in parenthesis, after the SNMP device name. What I would like to be able to tell PRTG to do is simply do nothing but a DNS lookup against the ip address of every device, and assign the name it gets back to each one. That would allow me to use the local hosts file to completely control what names the devices receive in PRTG.

Here's still more feedback/request. What to display in PRTG for device interface ('sensor') names. I would like the choice of having both the interface's name AND description shown. So, for example, <FastEthernet0/46 Uplink to Core Switch>. It's frustrating to have to choose between having either <FastEthernet0/46> *or* <Uplink to Core Switch>. Both pieces of information are essential for various network management and troubleshooting activities.

And still another request. I have looked through the help and knowledgebase but am still not clear the following task is possible. Suppose I have 350 switches that belong to an auto-discovery group that I created by plugging a list of their specific ip addresses into the auto-discovery template. In the process of running auto-discovery, I added a collection of several sensor choices to all the switches. That worked great! However, suppose I know want to modify what that collection of sensor choices are. Let's say I want to add one more to that collection. From what I have been reading and what I can see in the menus, my only choice is to go back and do that one at a time for each device? Or else, delete all the devices completely and start over again with the new set of sensors that I wish them all to have? I definitely wouldn't want to delete all those devices and start over again. I'd lose all the data collected for them, and all the work I might have done customizing some of them, and their placements in maps I've included them in, correct?

Can I ask you guys to maybe place all the different updates I've added to this thread today into a new thread somewhere else, dedicated specifically to documenting feature requests and feedback about the product? I didn't intend for this thread here to become that but as I've been trying the product out and hoping to make it work for my college's needs, I needed someplace to write all those things down right away, to share with you all. I don't have a record of them all myself though, unless you publish the whole thread. I'd understand if you didn't want to do it under the original topic though, because by now all of it has nothing to do with the original question anymore :)

And let me say again I really do love the things that PRTG is already able to do. It is powerful and looks beautiful.

AJAX seems to do a terriffic job of making a good looking presentation. It's only drawback is that it seems to be really really slow. I have adjusted the PRTG system settings to optimize for speed but that only helps a little. I will try using a browser other than IE9 to see if others perform more quickly.

I forwarded your feedback to our map-developer, there are further improvements and new features planned on the Maps and Map-Designer (as well as of course many other areas of PRTG) but I can't name any ETAs. Please be aware that, while your requests may of course make sense, there may be a lot of other things more often requested by more other users, and then those will have a higher priority to be implemented.
Furthermore, some of your requests can already be resolved using custom map objects.

It could be an old topic but I just want to share this site (http://www.html5interactivemaps.com/) which has some really cool html5 interactive maps.

There is a better build-In solution in the current Version of Map-Builder:

  • select an object in the map-builder.
  • In the "Eigenschaften" box on the top right corner, next to "external link" select "Wählen Sie ein Objekt aus"
  • In the Popup you select the Device, Group OR MAP you want to navigate.

So you can add "Buttons" to dive into sub-maps or back to "parent-map".
