I can’t add Dell PowerEdge sensors to PRTG. What can I do?

When I try to add an SNMP Dell PowerEdge sensor to PRTG, PRTG aborts the sensor deployment with an error message. Can you list the most common errors with Dell PowerEdge sensors and provide possible reasons and troubleshooting solutions?

This article applies as of PRTG 22

Common errors when using Dell PowerEdge sensors

Before you add an SNMP Dell PowerEdge Physical Disk sensor or an SNMP Dell PowerEdge System Health sensor to the target PowerEdge server, first make sure that you meet the requirements for these sensors. You must install the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) or iDRAC 7. For details, see What do I need to monitor Dell servers?

If you still encounter one the following common error messages, you can use our free SNMP Tester to walk specific OIDs. These OIDs depend on the sensor and whether you query data via OMSA or the iDRAC interface. The results of the SNMP walks can help debug your issues with Dell PowerEdge monitoring.

If the SNMP walks run successfully but your PowerEdge sensors do not work, save the results (click Save Log to File in SNMP Tester) and forward these files to us when you open your support ticket about this case. Sending your walks directly with your support request helps us help you faster.

Debug and resolve PowerEdge errors

Look below for the error message that your SNMP Dell PowerEdge sensor shows and follow the respective troubleshooting steps.

(1) The sensor could not find any disks on the monitored device. The reason might be a Windows security feature that prevents automatic integration of the Windows SNMP agent with the components from IBM. To resolve this issue, see https://kb.paessler.com/en/topic/73914. (code: PE188)

This means that there is no response from the target device. Check the following:

  • Is SNMP enabled on the device you want to monitor? Check SNMP availability with an uptime test using SNMP Tester. For more information, see the SNMP Tester manual, section 3: Quick Start: Test SNMP with System Uptime Request and the Knowledge Base article My SNMP sensors don’t work. What can I do?
  • Is the OMSA software correctly installed on the target system? In some cases, a restart of the target system is required after installing OMSA.
  • Are the needed OIDs reachable on the target system? Use SNMP Tester and run SNMP walks on the following OIDs:
    • Physical disk via OMSA: 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10893.1.20.130.4.1
    • Physical disk via iDRAC: 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.5.5.1.20.130.4.1

If the walks are successful but your Dell PowerEdge sensors do not work, save the log and send it to our support team.

(2) The validation of at least one of the new objects failed because of the following: Disk: Required field, not defined.

This means that PRTG received a reply, so SNMP is most likely enabled but the serial number is missing for this disk. You see a similar message in a sensor when a disk of the array has been replaced with a new disk that has a different serial number.

If the walks are successful but your Dell PowerEdge sensors do not work, save the log and send it to our support team.

(3) The sensor could not find any matching data on the target device. To resolve this issue, check if the target device meets the requirements and if the required OIDs are reachable. (code: PE187)

If there is no response from the target device, check the following:

  • Is the OMSA software correctly installed on the target system? In some cases, a restart of the target system is required after installing OMSA.
  • Are the needed OIDs reachable on the target system? Use SNMP Tester and run SNMP walks on the following OIDs (two walks for both OMSA and iDRAC):
    • System health (1) via OMSA: 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.1.300.10.1
    • System health (2) via OMSA: 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.1.200.10.1
    • System health (1) via iDRAC: 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.5.4.300.10.1
    • System health (2) via iDRAC: 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.5.4.200.10.1

If the walks are successful but your Dell PowerEdge sensors do not work, save the log and send it to our support team.
