User Story

As there are a lot of recurring automation process that being made on devices nowadays, it will be best for PRTG Network Monitor Pause and Scheduling function to be improved as well.

Details of User Story

Every month on a certain day and time, we would need to run a schedule automation process, maintenance or housekeep on some of our devices that been monitored on PRTG. In order to avoid sending unnecessary email alerts, we will need to set a maintenance window in PRTG or configure Schedule monitoring to them.

For example: Case 1 : On the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2AM until 4AM, a certain group of devices will run automatic update and restart once complete. This will trigger PRTG to send out alert as the device will be temporarily down. The process will recur every month until changes made to it.

Case 2 : A specific script is scheduled to be run on certain days of the month (which occur every month) that will consume most of device resource that will trigger the threshold alert set on PRTG. This is expected behavior and will be ignored from monitoring with pause function.

The current method that PRTG portal currently allowed is either by:

1. Creating a “One-Time Maintenance Window...” under the Pause function where users need to manually set every month

Or

2. Create a monitoring “Schedules” that will repeat every week. This will cause some problems, as users only need to not monitor it for a certain day and time of the month.

Base on this kind of case, it is best for Paessler Engineer to enhance current Pause and Schedules function that will greatly help to improve PRTG Network Monitor capabilities.

Acceptance criteria

  • Criterion #1 : Adding additional “Recurring Maintenance Window...” on the Pause function
  • Criterion #2 : Improve “Schedules” Edit mode to have either monthly per hour time table or monthly per hour on “list of period definitions ”.
