I got a ticket in PRTG saying that one of my sensors will be migrated. What does this mean? What happens during a sensor migration?

Sensor Migration

What is a sensor migration?

Long-term PRTG users may have noticed that we have recreated multiple existing sensors and marked them as “v2”.

Sensor technologies are constantly updating and, in an effort to keep PRTG and your monitoring technologies up to date, we continue to refine and improve sensors.

A sensor migration is when we replace older, deprecated or discontinued sensors with their newer versions or successors.

Once the newer version of a sensor or sensor alternative is established as stable for a certain amount of time, we deprecate and discontinue the former sensor. At the same time, we migrate any existing sensors to their newer version.

For example, if you used the Cloud HTTP sensor or Cloud Ping sensor previously, we automatically created the Cloud HTTP v2 and Cloud Ping v2 sensors on every corresponding device when it came time to deprecate the original sensors.

Do I need to do anything?

When it comes time to migrate a sensor to its newest version, Paessler handles the migration for you. First, we inform users via tickets in PRTG about the upcoming migration. Then, we migrate all affected sensors without any input from you.

During the auto-migration, we also pause the former sensors to preserve the historical data of the sensors. And then, for every sensor affected by the migration, we create the successor sensor on the corresponding device.

That being said, technology is constantly changing, and our sensors reflect this. If there is a sensor migration planned that requires your input due to new settings, required script changes, etc., we will let you know. Either way, we recommend that you check out the new sensor before a migration happens and adjust the necessary settings to prevent any downtime in monitoring.

Are there any upcoming sensor migrations planned?

Yes! The next migration is planned for PRTG 25.1.105.

We plan to replace the SSH INodes Free sensor with the SSH INodes Free v2 sensor.

Users will receive a ToDo ticket in PRTG if they are affected by this migration.

What next?

Our plan is to migrate all original sensors to their successor sensors, whether that be a newer version or a complete replacement. Keep an eye out for new sensors with “v2” in their name for an idea of what is to come.
