User Story

As a PRTG User, I want to be able to have a sensor/a device dependent on multiple sensors/devices.

Details of User Story

In greater environments we're often monitoring multiple locations. For sure we have a secure S2S VPN to each of this locations. Same, the locations have S2S VPNs among themselves. In case one location is going offline (error) all machines are depending on the PING sensor of the external devices. At the same time at each location the VPN Sensors to the offline location are going into error because we're not able to set the dependencies to their own external device AND the corresponding location.

Just one of many scenarios where multiple dependencies would be very useful - as we can see in the "asked questions" section.

Acceptance criteria

  • Criterion #1 Be able to make a sensor dependent on two/multiple sensors - not just one.
  • Criterion #2 (no must have) Be able to make a device dependent on two/multiple devices/sensors.

Status

Denied. Reason: There are already options available. See the answer below for details.

Configure a Dual Dependency

It is already possible to solve this today: You can set the Ping sensor as "Master sensor for parent" so that the entire own device is paused in case of a failure. At the same time, you can set dependencies for each of the other sensors on the device.

This way, each sensor can be dependent on the availability of its own device and on another object in the device tree, at the same time.

To map more complex decisions, please use the Business Process Sensor. For details about this, see
